To determine the style of fiber optics you will need for your handpiece, remove the swivel coupler from the handpiece tubing, and compare the configuration to the following drawings.

Five Hole Fiber Optic Systems

Popular in the U.S., these systems are an adaptation of the four hole handpiece connection, simply by adding a fifth hole for the light to enter the back of the handpiece. The light travels from the bulb up through the swivel coupler and through the handpiece via fiber optic glass rods.

Six Pin Fiber Optic Systems

Standard in Europe, these systems are also used in the U.S. due to the influence of European brand handpieces sold in the U.S. These systems are similar to five hole systems, however, instead of having the small bulb in the connector at the end of the tubing, the bulb is contained in the swivel coupler from the handpiece. The connector at the end of the handpiece tubing has two electrical sockets that connect to two small wires. The swivel coupler has two electrical pins that drop into these sockets when it is attached.

Universal Fiber Optics

ASI has eliminated the five hole / six pin confusion by offering a truly universal fiber optic system. ASI's tubing accepts both connections. ASI's Universal Fiber Optic System includes the power supply, single tubing with bulb, and six-pin adaptor.

The system includes five LEDS and cures all brands and ranges of resins. The optional Endo Guide Tip is ideal for retrofills and other narrow preparations. The system package also includes orange and green transilluminator tips for identifying caries, cracks and tooth defects.
